Marjorie Taylor Greene is trying to censure Ilhan Omar and boot her from her committees. AdvertisementRep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is forcing the House to vote next week to rebuke Rep. Ilhan Omar for a widely misquoted speech she recently delivered about Somalia. The Georgia Republican's resolution would censure the Minnesota Democrat and remove her from the remainder of her committees. In November, she forced a vote on a censure resolution against Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan for "inciting an insurrection" by speaking at a pro-Palestinian protest. But Greene's Tlaib censure failed after 23 Republicans voted against it, and Tlaib was later censured via a much more narrowly-tailored resolution days later.

CNN —American Airlines said it is reviewing a video posted on TikTok that shows a baggage handler releasing a passenger’s wheelchair to slide down a jet bridge chute, where it crashed into a metal barrier, flipped over and tumbled onto an airport tarmac. In the video, as the first man lets the wheelchair go, a second baggage handler, who is on the ground at the other end of the chute and wearing an American Airlines vest, steps back. American Airlines said in a statement, “We recognize how important it is to support the independence of customers with disabilities by ensuring the proper care of mobility devices throughout their journey with us. In 2022, American Airlines’ rate of damaging, delaying or losing wheelchairs and scooters was 2.00 per 100, DOT statistics show. Former President Donald Trump can appear on the primary ballot in Minnesota next year, a court ruled Wednesday, batting back a legal attempt to have him removed from voter consideration on the grounds that he is an insurrectionist constitutionally barred from holding office. "Winning the presidential nomination primary does not place the person on the general election ballot as a candidate for President of the United States," Hudson wrote. Aside from Minnesota, lawsuits have been filed in Colorado, Michigan, Arizona, New Hampshire and New Jersey to deny Trump a place on the ballot pursuant to a clause in the 14th Amendment of the Constitution. But even if the Constitution indeed prevents Trump from serving, it cannot stop Minnesota Republicans from engaging in their own, internal nominating process, Hudson wrote. A judge in Colorado held a hearing on the insurrection clause case last week, and a Michigan judge is hearing arguments Thursday.

CNN —Rep. Tom Emmer, the House majority whip whose bid for House speaker was thrown into immediate jeopardy Tuesday afternoon, has tried to balance an at-times moderate voting record while trying to appeal to the Donald Trump-aligned base of the Republican Party. The Minnesota Republican emerged Tuesday afternoon as House Republicans’ new speaker nominee in the scramble to succeed Kevin McCarthy. Several Republicans who oppose Emmer told CNN Tuesday they will not change their stance and are calling for a new candidate. As majority whip, Emmer has experience with keeping the GOP’s narrow majority in line. McCarthy has backed the Minnesota Republican for speaker and urged the conference to elect him by the end of the week.

House Republicans on Tuesday elected Representative Tom Emmer of Minnesota, the No. 3 in the party, as their speaker nominee after five rounds of ballots that pointed to a precarious path forward. Mr. Emmer, 62, has served since January as the party’s whip, responsible for counting and securing the votes to pass the speaker’s agenda. He was the highest-ranking Republican in the race, and has been endorsed by the ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer’s speaker bid crashed and burned on Tuesday just hours after his party nominated him for the gavel amid deep divisions within the conference that began to appear insurmountable three weeks into the standoff. And for other lawmakers, they simply didn’t believe Emmer could get the backing needed to secure the gavel. Emmer narrowly won the party’s nomination on the fifth round of votes behind closed doors on Tuesday in a contest that began with seven candidates, with the lowest vote-getter being dropped each round. Some of those candidates are expected to relaunch their bids for speaker in light of Emmer’s bowing out. Johnson, who was elected in 2016 and serves as the vice chairman of the House GOP conference, made a pitch as a “consensus candidate” for speaker.

The uprising that began nearly three weeks ago with the toppling of Speaker Kevin McCarthy has now weakened three of the most powerful figures in the House GOP. Republican leaders had promised voters during the election they would cut the mining permit review timeline in half and boost domestic EV mining, rather than seek more supply overseas. Westerman and other Republicans will be partially stymied by Republicans' failure to wrest control of the U.S. Senate from Democrats. With their newfound control, Republicans could threaten to withhold funding from agencies perceived as taking too long to approve mines. The Resolution project is opposed by Representative Raúl Grijalva, an Arizona Democrat who will relinquish his chairmanship of the House Natural Resources Committee to Westerman. Illinois Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger, who is retiring this cycle after voting to impeach former President Donald Trump, is endorsing a slate of high-profile Democrats (and a few Republicans) in key midterm races. Kinzinger is also backing Republican Sen. Shapiro, Hobbs, Fontes, Benson and Murkowski are all running against Republican nominees backed by the former president and who have all at least questioned the legitimacy of President Joe Biden’s election. While not backed by Trump, Nevada Republican secretary of state nominee Jim Marchant and Minnesota Republican secretary of state nominee Kim Crockett have also cast doubt on the 2020 election. While Lee subsequently voted to certify the 2020 election, opponents have used those texts to argue he lent a hand to those who sought to discredit the election.
